One man was killed in a wrong-way driving accident on US 36 in Westminster, according to 9 News. The eastbound lanes of the Boulder Turnpike had to be closed through the morning rush hour, so that a Major Accident Reconstruction Team can figure out exactly what went wrong to cause this tragic crash. Apparently, a Ford SUV traveling in the wrong direction on the Turnpike, US 36, crashed into an Acura in the early hours of the morning, before 3:00. A rider in the SUV was killed, and two people from each vehicle were taken to area hospitals, where their conditions have not been released. While investigators are unsure of the cause of the accident, they do believe that drugs or alcohol may have been involved in the accident.
Car accidents are one of the leading causes of accidental death in the United States, as they are responsible for over 30,000 fatalities annually, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Each of these accidents, regardless of cause, leaves at least one family to grieve the untimely death of a loved one. What makes these numbers more tragic is that many of these fatal crashes are preventable, caused by the negligent or careless driving of one or more driver. Furthermore, several thousand accidents are caused by drunk drivers every year. A fatal accident caused by drinking and driving seems even more pointless, because it is so easily preventable. Unfortunately, the fact that it could have been avoided is no consolation to the family of the deceased.
