Car accidents are one of the leading causes of accidental death in the United States, as they are responsible for over 30,000 fatalities annually, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Each of these accidents, regardless of cause, leaves at least one family to grieve the untimely death of a loved one. What makes these numbers more tragic is that many of these fatal crashes are preventable, caused by the negligent or careless driving of one or more driver. Furthermore, several thousand accidents are caused by drunk drivers every year. A fatal accident caused by drinking and driving seems even more pointless, because it is so easily preventable. Unfortunately, the fact that it could have been avoided is no consolation to the family of the deceased.

  • A alleged drunk driver crashed into a power tower, left the scene. And took himself to the hospital, according to the Denver Post. The man, who was found by police, and issued a summons for several charges, including DUI and hit-and-run, damaged the leg of an electrical tower operated by Xcel Energy, causing a situation where police and firefighters feared that the tower might actually collapse and fall on an area home. The owner of that home was called early in the morning by the city of Aurora, trying to warn him of the danger. He ignored the call, coming at about 5:30 in the morning, so a police officer and a firefighter went to his home to tell him that he should leave, as a precaution. Fortunately, the tower did not fall, and no one other than the driver was injured.

Fox News reported this morning that the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving is initiating an effort to connect people who have been arrested for Driving Under the Influence to people who have lost loved ones because they were involved in wrecks with drunk drivers. These connections are being made in an attempt to wake up people who drive drunk and alert them to the fact that if they continue to drive drunk they could end up killing someone.

According to their website, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (or MADD as they are sometimes called) has been fighting against drunk driving for over 30 years. They call themselves “one of the most widely supported and well-liked non-profit organizations in America.” According to their website, MADD claims to serve “a victim or survivor of drunk driving every nine minutes.”

In Colorado, someone is presumed to be driving over the influence if their blood alcohol level is above 0.08. Blood alcohol level can be measured by a roadside breathalyzer, or a person suspected of drunk driving can request a blood test. MADD reports that in the last 5 years there have been over 800 deaths in Colorado related to drunk driving, making injury as a result of DUI a serious threat to all Coloradans.

If you’re out and you think maybe you’ve had too much to drink, stop and think about the consequences of getting behind the wheel. If you’ve been injured by a DUI driver, you have rights too. Drunk drivers don’t get out of being liable for your injuries just because alcohol may have clouded their judgment.
